Last night, I was honored to deliver the official Working Families Party response to President Biden’s State of the Union address.
I spoke about how President Biden and Democrats in Congress worked together to pass the American Rescue Plan. We’ve shown that our government can be in service of working families, not just the wealthy few.
After our emergency response, we had a chance to do so much more. President Biden laid out his visionary Build Back Better plan, which would address decades of rising inequality and injustice.
No one fought harder for President Biden’s agenda than progressives. We came together to build community support and we played hardball in Congress to deliver for the people who call this country home.
But two forces stood in the way: a Republican Party that serves only the rich and powerful, and just enough corporate-backed Democratic obstructionists in the Senate to help them succeed.
I know we’re up against a lot. But when we connect with one another and build our solidarity, we can outwork the hate, and show that we aren’t going anywhere.
Let’s imagine a government where the people — not corporate donors — drive our policies on healthcare, climate, education, and poverty. Where the working families of our nation really call the shots. Where everyone has enough to thrive, not just survive.
We’ve got to make it happen. And together, we can.
The midterm elections are coming up fast, and we have to do more than just block the far right: We have to elect the next generation of progressive candidates who will put working people first.
We’re in this together. I promise to keep fighting for you and your family.
